Some farm tasks must be handled personally—abscess treatment is one of them. Abscess bacteria are highly contagious and can spread to animals and humans if mishandled. Cleanliness and correct procedure are critical.

What You Need

• Salt water (1 tbsp salt : 1 cup water)

• Disposable gloves

• New or fully sterilised razor

• Iodine / wound spray

• Syringe (no needle)

• Injectable antibiotic (short-acting preferred)

• Shovel (to bury pus)

• Strong stomach 

Steps

1. Dig a small hole for pus disposal. Wear gloves.

2. Shave and clean the area at the bottom of the abscess.

3. Make a small incision with a sterile razor.

4. Gently squeeze out all pus into the hole.

5. Flush the cavity with salt water using a syringe.

Repeat until fluid runs clear.

7. Spray disinfectant inside the wound.

8. Inject the antibiotic.

Aftercare

• Burn all used items (gloves, razor, syringe) and bury remains.

• For 3 days, flush the wound daily and apply wound spray.

• Isolate the animal where possible to prevent spread.

• If possible, take a sample to your vet for bacterial testing.
